Name: Japanese Quince. Its
real name is Chaenomeles from Greek CHAINO to gape and MELON apple; the
fruit was once believed to be split. Its origin is uncertain, (Japan?) but
we know that it was introduced into Europe in 1796. The flowers are also pink, white and scarlet; the fruits are round, yellow or yellowish green, and used for a marmalade. In the US this variety is found most in San Jose CA. |
